Frequently asked questions
A septic tank is a holding tank with minimal clarification; the wastewater then seeps into the ground untreated. A biological treatment plant cleans the water inside the tank before it reaches the soil or a receiving water body. Treatment performance is above ninety percent.
A biological plant works aerobically: the bacteria get oxygen from a compressor and break down the organic matter completely. No foul-smelling gases form. A septic tank works anaerobically, which produces methane and hydrogen sulphide. That is the difference in odour.
Biological systems with aeration need a power connection for the compressor. Consumption is low. For off-grid sites, a soil filter bed is available as a special option and works without electricity. We clarify what fits during the site visit.
It depends on the country, the region and the size of the plant. Our plants are tested to the European standard (CE marking under EN 12566-3), plus the requirements of your country. You will find an overview by country in the Resources menu, under “Laws and standards by country”. During the site visit we clarify which permits your project needs.
In that case, one shared plant for all the houses almost always costs less than one per house. Small groups of two to three families can often be covered by a single PUMP; larger groups and developments get a custom-sized plant.
