Septic tank
91% of domestic wastewater flow comes from septic tanks; only 4.5% from the sewer system. Barely 24% is safely treated.

In Suriname almost all domestic wastewater currently passes through a septic tank. AQUATO is a biological alternative to that system, planned in from the project design stage. With the basic data on the site and the project, we carry out an initial assessment; the final solution is then developed with the appropriate professionals and permits. This page is general guidance and does not replace legal advice.
Common practice today
Decentralised sanitation is already the rule in Suriname. The Government itself states that the septic tank system no longer meets current environmental requirements.

Every toilet is connected to a septic tank or a designated network. The effluent from the tank must pass through an oxidation bed before reaching a drain or watercourse, and the tank must not receive greywater or rainwater (arts. 47 and 68).

Using the checklist below, Ektennsa and AQUATO look at the capacity, which system suits the project (PUMP, STABI-KOM or ORKA), where it goes and where the treated water will be discharged.
Perceelkaart (plot map) and mortgage register extract, official decision on the plot or a sales contract legalised by a notary.
Your professionals prepare the 1:500 site location plan and the 1:100 foundation and sewerage plan using AQUATO's technical documentation. The application is submitted at the One Stop Window of Bouw- en Woningtoezicht.
Bouw- en Woningtoezicht decides within the statutory period and inspects the installations before they are covered. If there is a relevant discharge, the environmental permit from the NMA is also required.
